A Lesson in Practicing Acceptance and Remembering Your True Purpose

My serenity began when I got sober in 2005. In my sober recovery I was taught the difference between what I could control and what I couldn’t.

I was guided to become a spiritual student and lean on a power greater than me. My spiritual path has been a daily routine of learning to rely on the love of the Universe and release my faith in fear.

The Acceptance Prayer

One prayer that has guided me on this journey is the Acceptance Prayer from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous:

And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation — some fact of my life — unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake.

Our true purpose

In this video from 2015, I share a story about how I was recently humbled through the practice of acceptance. I was feeling overwhelmed by life and trying to control everything.

But then I was reminded of my true purpose.

Are you trying to control something in your life? Do you feel stuck? Is your ego running the show? My lesson in this video will teach you how to practice acceptance and remember your true purpose. (Warning: I drop some F-bombs in the video, but not in the post below.)

I had a little meltdown…

I was having a little bit of a meltdown a few months back. You know when the pressures of life just start to build up, and no matter how much you meditate, no matter how much you pray, your ego gets the best of you? Are you familiar with this situation?

That’s what happened to me. I was just taking on a lot of pressure, putting more on my plate, and it started to feel like life was a pressure cooker. Even though I was turning to my spiritual practice, I had a moment of meltdown.

I posted something on Instagram that was just expressing my feelings in the moment. It was something along the lines of, “I’m having a hard day and I’m choosing again.”

A good friend of mine, who’s a meditation teacher, saw my Instagram post. He wrote me a message saying, “Hey, what’s up? What’s wrong? What happened?” I wrote back, “You know, just trying to run a business, and be a wife, plan a family and living life.”

He was like, “Okay, got it.” He wrote back to me, and he said, “Never forget that you are a servant of something unstoppable. It’s not about you.”

It’s not about us

I really took that seriously. He just brought me right back to center and humbled me. He reminded me of my true purpose. “You are a servant of something unstoppable.” I will never forget that. I made it my mantra.

Owning my true purpose reminded me of what is most important: That is that I will be given all the resources, energy and support that I need to fulfill the mission that I have come here to fulfill.

When I remind myself of that, then all obstacles are cleared and the pressure is released. Even if I don’t know how I’m going to complete everything that I have taken on. I can trust in the abundance of the Universe.

You are a servant of something unstoppable

Now it’s my turn to remind you that you too are a servant of something unstoppable.

If you commit to allowing the energy of the Universe to move through you, guide you and direct you, then you’ll be given all that you need to show up in the world.

You’ll be given all that you need to release all boundaries with love. You’ll experience a tremendous amount of flow, support and guidance in any given moment.

If you’re feeling stuck and overwhelmed, or like the world is just getting the best of you, remember that you are a servant of something unstoppable. That is your true purpose.
