Happy New Year! I’m so psyched to welcome 2019 and all the opportunities for personal and spiritual growth it offers.

New Year’s is a special and sacred time. We can feel gratitude for all that we’ve experienced. And we can set ourselves up to attract our desires and open up to spiritual guidance all year long.

5 New Year’s rituals to welcome 2019

Below are some awesome New Year’s rituals and practices with you so you can ring in the year the Spirit Junkie way — feeling aligned, energized and excited for what’s ahead…

1. Put your desire in a Universe box

I release the outcome and surrender to a plan far greater than mine | Spirit Junkie App by Gabby BernsteinThis is a great practice that facilitates manifesting and spiritual surrender. I’ve been teaching this for many years, going back to my coaching days.

First, create a Universe box. This can be anything from a shoebox to a glass or wooden box, it doesn’t matter.

If you like to get crafty, you can have a lot of fun with this! You can start with a simple cardboard box and decorate it in any way that empowers you.

Next, write your desire on a piece of paper and put it in your Universe box. By doing this you are surrendering your desire to the care of the Universe.

One week later, take your desire out of the Universe box and safely burn it (I suggest doing this over a sink). Burning the desire shows that you trust it’s being taken care of. Surrender your desire once and for all and know that your request is being heard.

2. Set intentions with friends on New Year’s Eve

I do this every year on December 31st! It’s a fun group activity that gets everyone excited for the New Year.

Put a bowl in the middle of a table with several pieces of paper inside. Set out crayons, colored pencils or markers on the table. Each person takes two pieces of paper.

On one piece, you write an intention that you keep to yourself. (If you like, you can surrender this intention using your Universe box!)

On the other piece of paper, write an intention that you want to share with the group. Then take turns going around the table and sharing those intentions.

Let the energy of the group support you and uplift you as you commit to your intention. This activity often sparks great conversations and can be an awesome bonding ritual!

3. Give yourself a reading from The Universe Has Your Back deck

There are two ways you can do a New Year’s card reading using The Universe Has Your Back card deck. (If you have another way you like to use your deck, then feel free to do that instead.)

Pulling 1 card

The Universe Has Your Back card deck by Gabby BernsteinThe first way is to pull one card that will give you divine guidance for the New Year. As you shuffle your cards, be sure to call on the guidance of the highest truth and compassion to work through the deck.

You can say a prayer such as, “Guidance of the highest truth and compassion, thank you for revealing to me the card that will best guide me in 2019.”

Trust in the card you turn over. Each one is empowering. Even if you’re not sure of the meaning in your life right away, have faith that it will guide you. Once you pull your card, you may want to free-write about it in your journal for a few minutes, allowing inspired ideas to come forth.

Pulling 3 cards

Another way to use your card deck for a New Year’s ritual is to pull three cards. Just like above, as you shuffle your deck be sure to call on guidance of the highest truth and compassion.

You can say a prayer such as, “Thank you, guidance of the highest truth and compassion, for showing me the cards that give me insight into my past, present and future.”

Then turn over three cards.

The first card represents your past experiences. The second card represents the present moment. And the third card represents what you want to be, step into and create in the future.

4. Practice image making

I am the dreamer of my dream. | The Universe Has Your Back card deck by Gabby BernsteinThe images you focus on are the images that make up the dream that is your life, so practicing image making is a powerful way to know that the Universe has your back and begin awakening to the power of your own creations.

Image making practice

Begin the practice of image making by answering this simple question: What do you want to see?

Be unapologetic about your answer. Maybe you want to see a world without war. Maybe you want to see yourself in a wildly romantic relationship or walking through life free from fear. Create the images that you most long for.

Write your answer in your journal. What do you want to see?

Next, read your response and then immediately close your eyes and sit in stillness for five minutes. You can use the Image Making Meditation below (if you have The Universe Has Your Back, you can also download the audio from the resources page).

Gabby Bernstein meditatingSit up straight with your palms facing upward.

Close your eyes and turn your focus inward.

Allow your inner spirit (your inspiration) to come forth and surrender to the images that you want to see.

Let the wisdom within you create images in your mind’s eye.

Surrender to this wisdom now.

Breathe deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth.

With each inhale and exhale surrender more fully to the visions that you want to see.

Consciously focus your attention on it.

Allow visions of what you want to guide you on a journey of new perceptions.

Sit as long as you wish.

When you’re ready, gently come out of your meditation and take a moment to jot down any images that may have come through.

5. Start the New Year with a 40-day Liberation Kriya practice

The Liberation Kriya is also known as the Kundalini meditation for a fresh start.

Practicing a kriya puts physical and mental changes in motion to simultaneously stimulate the body, mind and spirit. In Kundalini yoga it is suggested that you commit to a kriya or meditation for 40 days in order to create a new habit and experience long-lasting change.

  1. I really liked how you linked the Spatial energy with the human mind and body. Truly empowerment develops when it relates with the energy in the universe. Any untrained mind is bound to wander in lost space unless it finds a path which gives meaning to his or her life.     You are a dear friend in my head. I have a little self care program that I recommend keeping yourself surrounded by positive messages. Such as your book, it has a title that is a must to keep close at hand. So not only is it filled with uplifting information, but just looking at the title is a grand reminder of how the “divine forces” are looking out for us. We must walk in faith. My dear husband of 45 yrs has had 36 surgeries and now has a brain tumor so it’s imperative that we live and walk in the light. It’s a practice, that I’m thankful that you are a part of. I look forward to making this journey with you. We travel together on this amazing trip to bountiful.

    I have two questions:
    – Do I put one or more desires in the Universe box per week?

    – Is there a smart way (app?) to monitor the three minutes sequences during the Liberation Kriya meditation that doesn’t disturb too much?

    1. Hi Hege! Starting out with one desire a week is great. It will help you get clarity and put energy towards specific things. Try using a timer or an alarm with a gentle ringer to keep track of the three minute increments. Big hugs from all of us at Team Gabby. XOX

  4. I’m interested in the Kriya meditation. I have a hard time keeping my mind focused on any kind of meditation – is there a mantra or specific thing to come back to other than breath when your mind starts to wander? Are we to ask for some kind of specific guidance from the universe?

    1. Hi Tracy! When you mind starts to wander, just notice the thoughts and then return to the breath. The mind will continue to get distracted, which is totally OK and normal. Gently noticing it and returning to the breath is a great practice.
