How to Use Crystals

For many years crystals have been part of my spiritual practice and everyday life. Here’s how to use crystals.

spiritual mother's day giftWhen I collaborated with my dear friend Satya to create Spirit Junkie jewelry, we were very deliberate about the stones we chose for each piece. The Spirit Junkie pendant has white topaz to help cultivate a strong sense of individuality, creativity and awareness. The Unconditional Love mala has rose quartz for unconditional love and rhodonite to support healing and inner growth.

I want to support anyone who is interested in incorporating crystals into their spiritual practice and daily life, so I called up Heather Askinosie and Timmi Jandro, the founders of Energy Muse. They gave me the lowdown on all things crystals!

Heather and Timmi started Energy Muse 17 years ago by selling pendants out of the trunk of a car in Manhattan Beach, California. Their first product was the jade Prosperity Necklace, which they gave to 10 different people, who all experienced awesome results in 10 days.

Since then their business has blown up! You can preorder their book, Crystal Muse, which comes out in October.

Whether you want to start working with crystals or already have a collection, keep reading for my crash course in crystals.

A little background: Humans have been using crystals forever

These days we use crystals in all kinds of ways, including for their very practical purposes. Think silicon dioxide in computer chips, rubies in lasers, and LCD (liquid crystal display) TV screens.

Since the very earliest civilizations, people have used crystals in everyday life as well as for healing. Egyptians ground up malachite for eye shadow and were often buried with quartz on their foreheads. People in ancient China were mining jade as early as 6,000 BC. Gemstones play a big role in Ayurveda, with certain stones used to balance the doshas, or constitutions.

Crystals are earth tools and require your cooperation

“If you think you’re going to get a crystal and the crystal is going to change your life, you’re going to be really disappointed,” Heather says.

Let’s demystify the idea of how crystals work and shift how we think about them!

“Crystals are earth tools. They help our human brain, which has limitations. A crystal holds the invisible world of energy in a way humans can touch and feel,” Heather says.

Just like with every other part of your spiritual practice, working with crystals requires your participation. You are a co-creator.

“What kind of crystal should I get?”

It’s easy to get caught up in the symbolism of every crystal and obsessed with finding the “perfect” one. Instead of getting super analytical and overwhelmed, take a few moments to connect with your inner guide by silently asking for guidance.

Then honor your feelings. If you’re in a store, touch and feel the stones. Which ones feel good? Which are you drawn to?

“You will know what you’re attracted to,” Heather says. “The No. 1 thing is trust yourself.”

If you’re shopping online, simply let yourself gaze at the different options, read the descriptions and see what pops out to you.

“Crystals help us get out of our head and get into our heart space,” Heather says. “Instead of asking ‘What do I think I need for myself?’ ask simply ‘What do I feel?’”

11 popular crystals you should know

Quartz: One of the master crystal stones and one of the main components of our Earth’s crust. It brings clarity, strengthens your intentions and helps you reprogram at the cellular level.

Rose quartz: This is the stone of love. Heather calls it “the Venus stone.” It’s what’s in my Unconditional Love mala! Rose quartz helps you attract love, open your heart and raise your self-esteem.

Citrine: This yellow stone is big on positive vibes! It can help you choose happiness and manifest your intentions. Citrine also has a reputation for being a money stone and a wealth magnet.

Shungite: This stone is having a moment! It’s used to neutralize electromagnetic frequencies, absorb negative energy and detoxify the body. Shungite is about 2 billion years old and is powerful to wear on your body.

Selenite: A white stone that helps clear your energy. It’s known as liquid light because it vibrates with a flow of bright, positive energy.

Blue lace agate: Helps release anxiety. Helps you communicate clearly and speak your truth from a compassionate place.

Black tourmaline and smoky quartz: These minerals help us release our shadow sides so we can move to higher planes. These darker stones are our foundation. Black tourmaline soothes anxiety and absorbs negative energy, while smoky quartz is both grounding and uplifting.

Amethyst: Amethyst emanates tranquil energy and mellows out any space! This is an awesome stone to use as decor because it’s such eye candy and protects any room with a positive aura!

Jade: Amps up your manifesting power! Jade is a stone of luck, prosperity and wisdom.

Onyx: Black onyx is very protective. Wear it to shield your mind and body from negative energy and to calm fears.

How to clean and charge your crystals

Crystals are such powerful energy conduits that they will store energy from everyone they come into contact with. Keeping your crystals clean resets their energy.

Clean your crystals, including jewelry, when you first bring them home. This clears away any energy they’ve stored while coming into contact with people who handled them before you. Then clean your crystals regularly to purify them and keep the conduit clear!

Here are a few easy ways to clean a crystal:

  • Bathe it in sunlight or moonlight. Set your crystal outside for 4 to 24 hours. Full sunlight and the full moon are particularly powerful, but any light bath is purifying.
  • Immerse it in sacred smoke. Light a sage smudge stick and gently hold your crystal in the purifying smoke. Open a window so the energy can recycle into the atmosphere. Be sure you use sage safely.
  • Connect it with nature. This allows your crystal to reset with the vibration of the earth! Take your crystal outside and set it in soil for 24 hours, or hang it on the branches of a healthy houseplant for 24 hours.
  • Rest it on selenite or quartz. Both selenite and quartz can charge other crystals without losing any of their own energy! Set your crystal on a piece of one or both for several hours.

How to use healing crystals

Once you’ve cleaned a new crystal, give it a job! Simply hold your crystal, quiet your mind with a minute of meditation and share your intention for it. Your intention is a prayer.

You can give your crystal any intention that feels right to you. “If you have a piece of rose quartz, you hold it and you might say: ‘I’d like to have this crystal hold the energy of light and love,’” Heather says. Each time you clean your crystal, reset your intention to strengthen your connection to it.

There are tons of ways you can use crystals in your daily life, from simple actions to more elaborate rituals.

Here are a few ways to work with a crystal:

  • Set up an altar where you can pray, meditate, surrender desires and connect with the Universe. My altar is a holy place in my home where I pray and meditate. It holds space for my dreams and visions. Check out my altar for inspiration in creating your own!
  • Carry it in your purse or pocket, or wear it daily (if it’s jewelry) to be aware of its energy and harness it. For example, an onyx amulet will protect your energy, while wearing blue lace agate near your neck helps open your throat chakra so you can speak confidently and clearly. Carry or wear citrine to boost your mood and your manifesting power.
  • Clear your aura with selenite! Stand and hold a piece of selenite in your hand, moving it from your head to your feet to remove and recycle negative energy and restore positive vibrations.
  • Meditate while holding clear quartz. This super-ancient stone amplifies your intentions.
  • Keep amethyst on your nightstand or dresser. It calms the energy of a room and reinforces your inner strength. It can also help you go deeper in a meditation.
  • Set up a crystal grid or balance/open your chakras with healing stones.

This is just scratching the surface when it comes to crystals! I want to know how you use crystals and which ones are your favorites. Leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts. I’m super psyched to see what you have to say!

  3. so timely, as i am just recently getting into using crystals in my energy healing practice! Shungite IS having a moment. and someone recently recommend i use it for purifying water.

any suggestions on how to buy crystals (Shungite and otherwise) so that you know you are getting good quality? in particular if one needs to buy them online?

    thanks so much for this!

  4. I recently acquired three crystals; two of them from workshops with Mama Medicine and one from a huge crystal that was used to create a labyrinth. After attending a reading with Mama Medicine, she told me that she wanted me to find another way to heal myself. I sometimes have knee pain & this eve my knee was bothering me. I came home and was immediately drawn to my crystals. I didn’t really know what I was doing but it felt intuitive. I set one of the crystals on my knee… my knee felt amazing!

  5. Hi Gabby! Thank you for this 🙂

Black tourmaline, amethyst and clear quartz are two of my favorite crystals! I also have been using them for years to heal myself and shift emotions – my fave technique is lying down with the crystals on my chakras and following an energy healing meditation.

Quick comment though – rose quarttz, amethyst, citrine and a few others can actually lose their color if we repeatedly use sunlight to clear and charge them. Another option would be to clear them by placing the crystals on a bed of rock salt for an hour when they are new, and then to charge them by holding in your dominant hand and visualising white light pouring down from above into the crystal

  6. Thank you so much for the simple, to the point write up. This is fantastic!
My favourite is citrine, clear quartz and amethyst. I’ve been recently playing around with making jewelry with my crystals, because usually I have them in my bra to have with me daily. I would much rather show my beautiful crystals off!! I’ve never made jewelry before, so it’s really trial and error right now.
I use my crystals as amplifiers right now but I am interested in learning how to use them in other ways!

  7. I’ve been wanting to buy some crystals but do not know too much about their properties. Thanks sharing this helpful information.

  8. Agate is my crystal of choice. I love the way it feels in my hand and when I wear it I feel free and at peace.

  9. Hi Gabby, thank you for sharing. It is very beautiful.
Aren’t you afraid that some of te mixed articles just do not collide? I like christal stones but I don’t now for sure if I choose the right one, stone? Can you really feel that?

    1. The Energy Muse blog is a great resource for learning how to use different crystals. Simply listen to your intuition — whatever crystal you are drawn to will be right for you. You can always recharge it as well. xo

  10. I’m super psyched because I just ordered my pink crystal choker bib style necklace in the middle of reading this that I knew was perfect when I saw it that will signify my baby daughter’s angel in heaven by wearing it off of my purpose to give me energy to my world changing plays that I write! Thank you Gabby, and Rebecca Campbell for suggesting pink for my daughter and saluting at one time. ❤️

  12. Hi Gabby, I love this post! I’ve recently fallen in love with crystals and just started creating my own crystal art! I sent one to my cousin a few months ago, who I didn’t realize at the time was pregnant. One of the stones in the piece happened to be moonstone, which is great for pregnancy/fertility (talk about the universe guiding me to the perfect one, lol). She had been dealing with bad morning sickness up until that point, but the first night she slept with the crystal art next to her bed, she woke up feeling great, and the nausea never came back! I was amazed! These stones really are so powerful, I love working with them. Also, I just wanted to say, you have been such a huge inspiration to me, I discovered you and your books in 2013 and you totally blew my mind and changed my perspective on life. Thank you for that <3… If you get a chance, take a look at my Etsy shop and let me know what you think of my designs 🙂

  13. Great reminder. I’ve been working with crystals off and on for years..I just picked up my clear quartz & rose quartz this morning and held one in each hand while meditating. I felt this comforting and grounding energy. Then, this article comes up. Looks like I’m moving in the right direction! Namaste!

    1. I meditate holding a moon stone in one hand, clear quartz in the other. These 2 crystals resonate with me so much.

  14. Absolutely loooove that you have written a post about crystals! Thank you Gabby!
I have just established my own business selling my uniquely handcrafted crystal necklaces!

I would love for you to check it out:

  15. Thanks for this blog gabby Working with crystals and doing my Reiki course at the moment and they really compliment each other, enjoyed reading it ✨xx

  16. Now Ive had a few people tell me never put out in sunlight. Or is that just certain crystals that can’t be in sun light?
Thank you so much for this guide btw!!❤️❤️

    1. A sunbath is a beautiful way to charge many crystals. You may want to search online for guidance with specific crystals. 🙂

  17. Thank you, Gabby, for this helpful information!
I use a combination of black tourmaline, hematite and rose quartz (which I place together in a soft pouch) tucked into my bra, right over my heart chakra.
Here is where I acquired this idea, perfect especially for every Empath who needs an extra shield for negative or harmful incoming vibrations:

  18. Gaby, Thank you! I am hoping you can provide some guidance. I love the beauty of crystals and my belief in their healing energy being part of God’s creation and love. However, I have a story in my head from someone with a different opinion that crystal power, among other mystical practices are occultism. I would appreciate your insight on this contradiction. I have a small collection that brings me great joy, but also some guilt because I know my mom doesn’t approve, and she planted a fear that it is anti-Christian. I appreciate your words of wisdom.

    1. Hi Kelly! First thing: The Spirit Junkie approach to spirituality is completely non-denominational. I encourage everyone to develop a spiritual relationship of their own understanding. However, if a practice doesn’t resonate with you, that is perfectly fine. Listen to your own inner guide. 🙂 It sounds like you do want to incorporate crystals into your spiritual practice, though, and are struggling with a fear story from your mother. Practicing a cord-cutting visualization may help you to cut the energetic cord that keeps you connected to your mom in this particular way. I also advise finding a supportive community of spiritual running buddies. Other folks who may come from similar backgrounds may be able to help you heal old stories. 19. Hi Gabby. I love crystals. Moonstone, Haematite, Sunstone and Labradorite are some of my favourites at the moment, but my favourites shift a little depending on what I need at the time. But I always carry a little chip of Citrine in my purse 😉 Hope you’re having a wonderful day 🙂 xx

  20. Some crystals are high vibration and some lower, it’s very important to go with the one that’s right for your vibration level. I once used Kyanite when I was not ready and it was a great lesson to have learned. Shungite is truly great. I have an iMac and two large screen smart TVs in different rooms at home and place little pieces of shungite at the bottom of each one of them as I am especially sensitive to EMF and I noticed its completely zapped this out of my energy field, leaving it really clean and clear. Also Malachite is great for those sensitive people who travel a lot, combined with Red Jasper, will ground you if you are energetically sensitive like me.

    1. Love this — so important. We need to ground ourselves before we can crack open. And yes shungite is amazing!

  21. Thank you, Gabby! I’ve always loved crystals, but never knew too much about them, and I’d like to start using them as part of my healing journey. I feel like blue lace agate is what I’m needing right now in my life, and selenite (“liquid light” just sounds so soothing). I’m so grateful for your insight and will check out Energy Muse for some inspiration, too! Love and light to you always.

  22. This totally inspired me Gabby – thank you! I’ll be pre-ordering the book and am signed up for my crystal certification workshop part one in Toronto this week! Also created a love altar, thanks for sharing yours 🙂 xo

  23. Hi. I have citrine, rose quartz, pink opal, shard of blue kyanite, amethyst, clear quartz, Smoky quartz, green aventurine and hematite. Could you please suggest combinations such as reconcilliation, manifest and spirit work please?

  24. Thanks Gabby for sharing such informative blog about crystals. I love crystals as they look really beautiful and its effects are awesome. My grand-mom had gifted me a crystal and I have been using that crystal since I was a child. Now I want to gift one to my son. One friend suggested me to buy one from here: http://ayanaproducts.com/ Can you being a crystal expert suggest another good site that provides energy healing. I will really thankful to you.
