Chords of Love

Have you ever had a strong emotional reaction to a song? You know—the kind that makes tears well up in your eyes and goosebumps dot your skin as you’re energized and inspired by the sound. If you have, you know that a song can be the catalyst for an awesome loving experience.

Recently this was the case for me. A few weeks ago I had brunch with an old friend. We caught up on everything that was happening in our lives. Toward the end of our time together, in the middle of a knockoff furniture store, he asked me to listen to a song he’d recorded with his band, Jones Street Station.

I agreed to listen. Pleasantly perched on a fake Eames chair, I pressed play. Within the first few chords I felt chills ripple down my spine and energy rush through my body. The loving intention of the music bled through each lyric and chord. Then, out of nowhere, uncontrollable tears poured down my face. I didn’t care that I was in a public place or that my mascara was running. How could I? I was having an inspired moment and nothing else mattered.

The song moved me from my core. When it was over I turned to my friend and said, “thank you.” His song surprised and empowered me.

Music is one of the greatest tools we have to reconnect ourselves to our inner spirits. I hope you’ve had this kind of musical encounter at some point in your life. Regardless of whether you’ve had a similar experience in the past, it’s never too late to welcome a musical intervention. If you’ve felt frustrated, angry, or lackluster about certain areas of your life, you can use music to reenergize you from the inside out.

Below are three steps to pluck your heartstrings and spark your inner flame.

Positive Perception Playlist

If you want to shake a negative pattern, make a positive perception playlist. Create a mix of songs that activate your inner state and make you feel happy. Listen to them when you wake up in the morning, during your commute, at the gym, while you cook dinner, etc. Most importantly, use this playlist to shift your energy whenever you feel down. You can pack it with songs that are peaceful and calming or upbeat and energizing—or both. Let the music be your guide to reactivating your positive perceptions.

Press Play

Far too often, we get bogged down with our busy schedules and to-do lists and forget to put on music and let our minds recalibrate. Schedule five minutes a day to sit in stillness and listen to an inspiring song or two. Soften your mind as you let the music wash over you. This ritual will begin a powerful meditative practice of turning inward and releasing worldly concerns. In this stillness you can access your inspiration.

Listen Live

Experiencing live music is one of the most powerful ways to change your mood. A live audience can soak up the powerful energy in the room, the intentions from the musicians on stage and the love within the sound. If you’re looking to get out of a funk, go see some live music and let go of your inhibitions. Savor the vibe in the room, groove to the beats, and witness your energy shift. This month there are some awesome shows in New York. Check out Thought So on 1/29 at Gramercy Theater or Jones Street Station on 2/11 at Mercury Lounge.

Your thoughts and energy create your reality. Therefore, take charge of your emotional experiences and let music lead you to a more positive perception. Create a Positive Perception Playlist, press play, and go see a concert. Change your mind, change your energy, change your life!

    1. Gabby – that is a wonderful song. Just added it to my playlist and printed the lyrics! Can’t stop playing it. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  1. Music is my way of “Feeling the feeling.”

Sometimes these feelings might make me sad or mad, but because I experience them in the musical sanctuary, I am able to totally release the feelings.

The song that is my go to make me happy/strong song is “Little Black Sandals” by Sia. Listen to it while walking down the street. Amazing.

I am a musician, please visit my music page on facebook:

  2. Hi Gabby

One of my favourite songs at the moment is Katy Perry’s Firework! I know it sort of sounds a bit cheesy but it really does uplift me and give me goosebumps and inspiration. 🙂 Also love Bubbly by Colbie Caillat, The Touch (by Stan Lee?), Beautiful by Christina Aguilera, True Colours by Cyndi Lauper, Happy by Leona Lewis and Adia by Sarah McLauchlan. Also Pink’s Raise Your Glass is very inspiring. 🙂

Just a few to start the list off! 😉

  3. Hi Gabby,

Just watched this with my husband who is a fellow Bass Player as well!
Chris just said what you are talking about is everything he is about.
He wants to share this with you: “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” -Berthold Auerbach
from the book SPIRIT INTO SOUND The magic of music by Mickey Hart

And I can relate being in a relationship with someone who is absolutely moved by music and bass!!!
    Love ya,
    Nicolette

  4. Hi Again,

Chris and I talked about 2 songs that move us.
Chris says Closer to the Heart by Rush and me well I am a Madonna fanatic, I will say Ray of Light!!
    Rock on!

    Nicolette

  5. I love India.Arie, she’s just such a powerful positive artist so anything of hers sticks out but “There’s Hope” and “Private Party” are good ones.

  6. My favorite would be “Listen” by either Charice or Beyonce. It is so moving and I love dancing to it. I just let myself go. But I would also like to add “This Time” by Carrie Underwood. And finally “Can I Have This Dance” from High School Musical 3 – yes I am a huge Disney fanatic. But this song makes me so loved and special when listening to it.

  7. My archery team loves “Pretty Girl Rock” by Keri Hilson, “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz, and “Ray of Light” by Madonna when we’re trying to amp up our girl power 🙂

  8. ‘Alright’ & ‘When We Get By’ by D’Angelo both make me feel lighter than air, ‘Video’ by India Arie always puts a smile on my face, and James Brown gets me shaking my moneymaker like there’s no tomorrow! Anything by Janelle Monae, particularly ‘Tightrope’ is guaranteed to elevate my mood tenfold.

I’m a singer and songwriter myself, please listen over at http://soundcloud.com/slsanderson .. Hopefully my music will be making the cut for power playlists one day soon 🙂

    Huge love everyone! X

    * hello new shoes, bye by blues
    * I put some new shoes on, and suddenly everything is right,
    * take me wondering through these streets, where bright lights and angels meet

LUV IT! So glad I watched this Vlog .. gave me an excuse to hear the song again (remember the title) … smile + move! Have a beautiful day!

  11. It is hard to pick one, but I am going to go with “Live High” by Jason Mraz!

Well, also “Everybody Got their Something” by Nikka Costa, and the soundtrack to “Dil Bole Haddipa!” ( a Bollywood movie), and of course you’ve got Chaka Khan, Michael Franti, Michael Jackson, and Alanis Morissette, “Thank U”…:)

  14. Hey Gabrielle!
I love this vlog! thank you for sharing and expanding in such a wonderful, joyous way. I love the healing powers of music!

This is one of my favorites- “Hey World” by Michael Franti by Spearhead. Every New Years Day morning, I dance around to Spearhead in my underwear which for some reason makes me feel free, grateful, compassionate and straight-uplifted 🙂

One more thing I’d love to add to music & energy..
if y’all get a chance, pick up a guitar and start strumming! The smell of the wood, and the sound that resonates through the instrument will no doubt change any negative thought into a positive one like that. There’s something *rad* about breaking through creatively, especially with music, something that’s interwoven in our lives. And to actually make a sound– a pretty amazing thing.

    Have a beautiful MLK day.. ! 🙂

  15. Hey Gabrielle!
i love this vlog! thank you for sharing and expanding in such a wonderful, joyous way.
i love the healing powers of music!

This is one of my favorites- “Everyone Deserves Music” by Michael Franti by Spearhead. Every New Years Day morning, I dance around to Spearhead in my underwear which for some reason makes me feel free, grateful, compassionate and straiight-uplifted 🙂

One more thing I’d love to add to music & energy..

  16. Weightless by Natasha Bedingfield! “The sky is the limit and I just want to float, free as a spirit on a journey of hope. Cut the strings and let me go, I’m weightless!”

  17. Okay, Gabby! I got my hot little hands on my laptop long enough to listen to the music vlog post… Then I’m gonna dive into the cutting the cords vlog from last week (Already playing catch up at the beginning of the year?! Good thing I’m reading Pema Chodron and treating myself with loving kindness or I might be beating myself up right now.)

So, I’m going to do us both a favor and keep my suggestions to TWO.

I could go on and on about the impact of music in my life, what MY music (music I love) says about me being my authentic self, and what leaving my favorite music behind for two decades said about how much I had moved away from my true self. I’m going to refrain, using great self control (and also reminding myself that I want to listen to cord cutting)…

SONG NUMBER ONE: Peter Gabriel’s Shaking the Tree

IMHO, This song should be an anthem for women’s rights world-wide. That it was written by a man, though a forward-thinking one, is actually kinda cool because it shouldn’t be so much man v. woman but man and woman respecting one another. Let me just say I’m not a huge women’s libber, per se… I prefer my vision of Women’s Lib 2.0 ~ putting ourselves back on the pedestal, celebrating our wonderfulness, treating our bodies, and our minds and hearts, with self-respect and dignity, thus expecting it of others, and treating others, man, woman, or otherwise, with respect as well.

Here’s the youtube link (enjoy!) followed by the lyrics (amazing):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4cSLAP406o

Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin’ the tree

Waiting your time, dreaming of a better life
Waiting your time, you’re more than just a wife
You don’t want to do what your mother has done
    She has done
This is your life, this new life has begun
    It’s your day – a woman’s day
    It’s your day – a woman’s day

Turning the tide, you are on the incoming wave
Turning the tide, you know you are nobody’s slave
[ 1989 version – Find your Brothers and sisters ]
[ 1990 version – Find your sisters and brothers ]
Who can hear all the truth in what you say
They can support you when you’re on your way
    It’s your day – a woman’s day
    It’s your day – a woman’s day

Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin’ the tree
Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin’ the tree
Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin’ the tree

    [ extra lyrics from 1989 12″ remix ]

There’s nothing to gain when there’s nothing to be lost
There’s nothing to gain if you stay behind and count the cost
Make the decision that you can be who you can be
    You can be
Tasting the fruit come to the Liberty Tree
    It’s your day – a woman’s day
    It’s your day – a woman’s day

[ end of extra lyrics from 12″ remix ]

Changing your ways, changing those surrounding you
Changing your ways, more than any man can do
Open your heart, show him the anger and pain, so you heal
Maybe he’s looking for his womanly side, let him feel

You had to be so strong
    And you do nothing wrong
    Nothing wrong at all
We’re gonna to break it down
We have to shake it down
    Shake it all around

Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin’ the tree

SONG NUMBER TWO: Can’t Keep It In, Cat Stevens

This is my ultimate “crank it up in the car” song, with lyrics like “live for today, then let it go…” and “You’ve got too much deceit, deceit kills the light,
light needs to shine, I said shine light , shine light.” Ya, that’s what I’m talking about! Absolutely Joyful and Empowering… I can’t imagine singing to this song and not feeling fully ejuvinated in that moment!

Here’s the video, followed by lyrics, (taking up space on your page but saving you those extra steps of searching around…):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W_SGoBFJxs

Oh I can’t keep it in, I can’t keep it in, I’ve gotta let it out.
I’ve got to show the world, world’s got to see, see all the love
love that’s in me. I said, why walk alone, why worry when it’s
warm over here. You’ve got so much to say, say what you mean,
mean what you’re thinking, and think anything.
Oh why, why must you waste you’re life away,
you’ve got to live for today, then let it go
Oh, lover, I want to spend this time with you,
there’s nothing I wouldn’t do, If you let me know.
And I can’t keep it in, I can’t hide it and I can’t lock it away.
I’m up for your love, love heats my blood,
blood spins my head, and my head falls in love, oh.
No, I can’t keep it in, I can’t keep it in, I’ve gotta let it out.
I’ve gotta show the world, world’s got to know,
know of the love, love that lies low, so
Why can’t you say, If you know, then why can’t you say.
You’ve got too much deceit, deceit kills the light,
light needs to shine, I said shine light , shine light.
Love, That’s no way to live your life,
you allow too much to go by, and that won’t do.
No, lover. I want to have you here by my side
Now don’t you run, don’t you hide, while I’m with you.
‘N I can’t keep it in, I can’t keep it in, I’ve gotta let it out.
I’ve got to show the world, world’s got to see, see all the love
love that’s in me. I said, why walk alone, why worry when it’s
warm over here. You’ve got so much to say, say what you mean,
mean what you’re thinking, and think anything. Why not?
    Now why why why not?

Signing up for your Wednesday night lecture, btw, I’ll be attending virtually speaking from Boston’s North Shore.

I am reading your Miracles Now book. This past year I read add more -ing to your life and your audio lecture on May Cause Miracles changed my life! I wanted to listen to the positive perceptions playlist but can’t access it through Itunes for some reason. Just wanted to see if there was another way to get to it. 1. I am having the same issue! I really, really want to hear the playlist, but iTunes isn’t cooperating! Please advise ASAP, Gabby!

  22. You could potentially absolutely visit your competencies inside the function you are submitting. The earth desires a lot more ardent writers just like you exactly who may not be fearful to mention that they think. On a regular basis follow your current heart.

  23. Hello everyone, it’s my first pay a visit at this web
site, and piece of writing is genuinely fruitful for me,
keep up posting these articles or reviews.

  24. Thank you for some other informative website. Where else could I am getting that kind
of info written in such a perfect manner? I’ve a challenge that I am just now running on, and I
have been at the glance out for such info.
