My #1 Tool for Making Resolutions Stick

Happy New Year everyone!

Phew, can we just take a collective breath right now and honor all that we’ve been through.

While January is traditionally thought to be the perfect time to create change (hello, every “New Year, New You” meme popping up in our IG feeds), unfortunately creating long-lasting results can be a challenge.  There isn’t a magic pill or quick fix to instantly make our goals happen. True change doesn’t allow for shortcuts.

Look, it’s not that resolutions don’t work. In fact, making a resolution can be a powerful choice—as long as you are consistent and commit to your goals. Want some help with the commitment part?

To start, here’s my #1 tool for making resolutions stick.

My #1 Tool to Make Resolutions Stick

The best way to confidently set out to fulfill your resolutions is to repeat new behavior. Repetition and consistency is the key to creating permanent change. Studies show that when you repeat a new practice for 30 days you can shift the neural pathways in your brain. Just by repeating new behaviors, we turn them into positive, long-lasting habits.

My hope for you this year is that you can actually see that consistent, permanent change.

Repeat After Me….

It’s far too often that we see ourselves fall off the resolution track after two weeks. Countless studies show that after two weeks people just completely blow off their goals.

If you truly want that permanent change, it comes with daily repetition and commitment. A Course in Miracles teaches that miracles arise out of conviction. So the miracle of changing a habit or starting to eat healthy, or quitting drinking, or changing your job—those miracles will occur out of conviction. I want you to really go into this year with fierce commitment. Really, really make a desire and commitment to show up every single day repeating that new behavior.

My intention for you is to remember that the process of repetition can be your greatest resource as you embark on the journey of creating a new pattern and new habit this year.

Hold Yourself Accountable

Gabby Bernstein, Step into Your power mantra

I talk a lot about spiritual running buddies. To really help you make your resolution stick is to create a posse to help be your spiritual cheerleaders.  Better yet, there are a few days left to join my 21-Day Manifesting Challenge and you’ll get a support group built right in (me included!).

Often we have to really hold to the commitments that we’re making when we invite other people in on our journey. In the Manifesting Challenge Facebook group, you can post how you’re staying consistent publicly every single day. It’s a great opportunity for us to put it out there and get people to gather around our commitment and our change.

Don’t hesitate to share about it on social media because your friends will hold you to it.

Write It Down

Journaling will set you up to win … all day long. Right when you wake, grab your notebook and write out what you appreciate.  It can be as simple as, “I appreciate my cozy sheets” or a little more personal like, “I appreciate how wonderful my partner is because…” Get that high-vibe feeling as you write each word.

Focusing on everything you appreciate attracts more of it to you.

Then, before bed, write down your wins for the day. Closing out the day by celebrating your miracle moments is a great way to see, in real time, the progress you’re making. Write down all the wins you had that day—even if they seem small, like being first in line at the coffee shop. This is especially helpful if you have a busy brain at night or trouble sleeping. You’ll break free of that negative pattern and shift your focus onto all that is going well.

  1. Happy New year <3

Thank you Gabby for your vlog, I send you big heartfelt grattitude from my spirit to yours. I want to make a commitment to change and stop comparing myself to others and instead recognise my light when I see the light in others.. I know longer want to feel threatened and inadequate when someone else shines. I usuallymake myself shrink and dissapear. it has always been easier to hide, but also just as painful. I no longer wnt to make myself small. In order for me to serve in the best way I am allowed to shine and recognise the power in me and rejoice in the divine of others too. I really want to be of service to the world and bring healing, grace and harmony.

    This is my commitment xxx

Peace, love, light and blessings xxxx

    Thank you for this space

  2. Gabby I met you at your Sydney meeting a few weeks back – my girlfriend gave me the ticket (Virgin girls!!) and your answer to my question greatly inspired me.
Anyhow…. In creating new habits, I’ve created a few key ones since meeting you… Duo daily meditations, prayer and daily yoga. I gotta say I’m feeling happier than ever before and I couldn’t agree more with the power of repetition. Thank you!

  3. Hi Gabby…reading May Cause Miracles to start my New Year off right! Was wondering if it’s ok to take a couple of days for certain days…as in willing to witness your fears…it has opened my eyes and feel as though with all of my fears I should spend more time on certain things. What do you recommend?

  4. Hi Gabby,

I absolutely love this video. I wanted to let you know that I went to a spiritual retreat this past weekend and two women there both told me that I remind them of you. I was absolutely stunned, flattered and even more than anything, I was motivated. I absolutely love what you do and your energy. It’s very genuine, so for that I thank you. I love having you as a role model for how I want my own words to be spoken, even though I’ll always be true to myself!

I’d love to get you on my self love and body image podcast. I focus on how to conquer your inner perfectionist by manifesting the mindset of your dreams towards body image, food and the self. It would be a pleasure to have you on! You can check it out on iTunes (Mind Body Musings Podcast) or on my website http://mindbodymusings.com. Thank you so much for everything!

    Warmly,
    Madelyn

  5. Thank you Gabby for your video. I was just deleting emails because I was away and something made me stop and listen. I am starting today! I really ate too much sugar and things that were not good for my body. I gained weight and feel yucky! I am going to make a pledge to make the effort each day to really be consistent with my activity and food choices. I will get past the 2 week sink and will keep you posted. I am excited to do this for myself but also for those who will see my progress and will be inspired. Thanks again

  6. Thank you Gabby for your inspirations! Found you on Marie TV (love her) & just purchased several of your books, CDs. You both have been a blessing after being hit by a car while walking home in a snowstorm! Was drug under the car down a hill, burned, broken bones, etc. The greatest gift of walking was taken from me in a flash. So many thanks for inspiring me to get going, regroup, rebuild, & relive! Much love! 🙂

  7. Thank you. In all honesty I’ve never made any serious resolutions until this year. I’m committing to working hard on my addiction towards men and food. After a rough 2014 i am going to make good and healthy choices for myself. I believe that will greatly serve me in the years to come. Blessings to all, and happy new year <3

  8. Happy new year! This year I want to focus more on myself, my health and well being. I am a nurse and a single mother of 3 young adults. I also take care of my father who lives with us. Since his needs have become more demanding I seem to have lost myself. I have put on weight and I stay in all the time, using my dad as an excuse sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I love taking care of people…it’s my thing. But I feel like I am neglecting myself. I want to start exercising and eating better so I can feel healthy and vibrant and enjoy my life, while still taking care of the people I love. Thank you for your inspiration.

  10. I whole heartily agree with what you have said! Repetition is something I work with not only with myself but with clients. And patience and time. Small changes really do produce big changes! Thank you for sharing and happy New Year!

  11. I want to stop complaining and living a life of negativity. I have a beautiful life, wonderful, loving people in it, I need to start living with deep gratitude for all of the blessings in my life.

  12. Happy New Year!!! I’m ready to maintain my fitness & meditation goals & bring my core desire feelings into everything I do! I’ve created a facebook community & am posting daily to keep myself accountable! Sat Nat

  13. My resolution is to practice singing and voice-building every day so that I can go from being an okay singer to an amazing singer- and record my EP later this year! Thanks so much Gabby for all that you do 🙂

  14. Hi Gabby! Thank you for your video. My commitment is to work on money making activities 5 days per a week for 5 hours per a day. I have been a struggling singer/artist for 5 years and I have decided to focus on coaching singers more heavily in 2015 so that I can fund my desire to sing, make a positive impact in the lives of others and also live a more luxurious life. I am putting an end to my story that an artist has to struggle. My ultimate dream is to be in the spotlight and make a positive impact

  15. I want to let go of negativity, clutter and disorganization and insecurity. I would like more love and loving people in my life in 2015. Most of all I want to love and accept myself in 2015.

  16. Thank you for your wise words, wisdom and motivation. I would really really like to win the battle with my alcohol addiction.

  17. Thank you for this vlog! I absolutely agree with this notion of consistency. I’ve seen it play out personally for me, as I’ve commited to a meditation practice every morning for the past two months. The results have been so wonderful in helping to ground me and keep some of my anxieties at bay. For me, meditation is not a cure all and I am still on my path towards realizing my potential and living in my truth. I’ve been reading some of your books, Gabby, as well as Deepak Chopra, Pam Grout (and others) and I notice what usually scares me away are all the exercises that are written in the books. And duh! That’s the whole point! For 2015, I will focus my energy on not running from these personal exercises so that perhaps I can answer some of the burning questions in me and help understand who I really am. Thank you so much for all the light and love you give Gabby!!

  18. Thanks for the VLOG. Fabulous as usual. Very surreal occurance as I was watching your video… It was like I was going cross eyed and seeing 2 of you. Nothing wrong with 2 Gabbys but did make me reflect…. (i) either I need glasses (ii) you’ve got a strong energy source with you at the time of filming (iii) got a new energy source coming through.

Either way thanks to my 2 x Gabbys coming through this morning. Enjoy Australia.

  19. Hi! My name is Sarah and this month I will be looking foreword to signing up for Get More Gabby. This next year I am making resolutions to work with The Desire Map, to eat healthier (one step at a time), to gravitate toward situations that give me more happiness. This year I am going on a joy diet… I want more joy. I also want to have fewer regrets so something I started working on this week and IT IS A RESOLUTION is that I will do something that would me regret not doing it each day. That can be reading that book I want to read, going back to college to study what I love. No regrets means flirting with the man I believe is so handsome that my eyes are falling out of my head. LOL. I started doing the no regrets and it feels like everything has clicked. I feel that I am spiritually guided to do that too. So, I will probably continue that. Well, onwards and upwards! Have a great new year and if anybody is looking for a spiritual running buddy let me know. I am looking for one too!
    To having no regrets,
    Sarah

  20. Happy New Year Gabby! My sister, who is becoming more and more of a Spirit Junkie everyday, told me about this great New Year’s resolution technique. The technique is – place words like “save” “finish” “trust” “courage” “listen” etc. in a hat and go around to each member of the family and have them pick a word from the hat with their eyes closed. In that moment, the Universe picks a word for them and they have to live by that word in the New Year! My word was “finish” which says a lot about my character. When I say I’m going to do something, I need to stick to it and finish. Thought you might find this interesting! 🙂

  21. Hi Gabby,
Thanks for the reminder … I have used these tenants successfully as an athlete (body) and professional (mind). Since becoming a mother 7 years ago I’ve been cracked open spiritually & unfortunately anxiety and not until recently thanks to your tools, Mastin and Maryanne and of course my yoga have a found a guide, practice to spirit and inner peace. This year I plan to release fear and move to love using a regular meditation practice and journal as I move in this direction and quiet my mind…
    so very grateful,
    Christa

  22. Happy new year to you Gabby!!!
My 2015 resolution is a big one: I desided to let go of fear and choose love instead every morning when I wake up.
That’s because I usually wake up cranky and have negative thoughts first thing every morning. My mum used to wake up like that…but I’m done!
    I choose love!!!
I don’t fool myself into trying to stay in a love-mode all day, but definitively want to wake up positive and start from there.

  23. Happy New Year! This was a perfect reminder as I just created my list of resolutions and intentions for New Year!
    Blessings
    Ana

  24. Thank you for this vlog! I absolutely agree with this notion of consistency. 25. Staying consistent is so important. I try to stay on this path and find myself slipping but this reaffirms what I need to do. So much help Gabby, you are great. So glad to hear these videos, Spirit Lady!!!

  26. Gabby…Happy New Year and I am grateful that your book fell off the shelf and into my life this year. Along your book, I also had Pam Grouts, Jon Mundy, Andy Puddicombe and the A Course in Miracles jump off the store shelves and into my cart! Honestly I think I’ve been on a spiritual search for years now trying to find my way home. There is something in me that knows the truth, but it is buried by all the noise I’ve created in my own head…all the things that I’ve taken as my truth that are nothing but lies. Now, I’m on Day 8 of your May Cause Miracles and I’ve set my intentions to see this through…to find my way back to remembering truth, love, light and God! Let me say…that junk in my head is a hum bugger! It’s fighting tooth and toenail to try and prove my heart wrong…I do believe in miracles…I know this down to my core…how do I get my Ego to shut up and allow the truth to reign free. I’m doing the exercises…fully and heartfelt and I feel that I am going in the right direction and then bam…that negative starts whispering again and my brain grabs hold of it. I’ve been trying some of the experiments in Pam’s books and some work and some don’t…there is doubt even when I believe. How do you get past that? Thank you for being a Miracle Worker…in my heart I know this is the right journey and I can see myself on the path home!
    Always Grateful
    Gina

  27. In 2015 I am finally going to finish A Course in Miracles. I have had this book sitting on my shelf for 10 years,I often started reading it but gave up. Never made it past chapter 9..this fall I followed a course based on the Course that will continue until the summer. I have my reading guide printed out,I have bought a notebook in which I will add what I have learned every day. The book is sitting on my table, next to a candle, and as of January 1 2015 I will be reading from it every day except for Saturday and Sunday. 2015 will be the year I will finally study, and finish this huge book that has been tempting me for so long 🙂 Have a blessed new year, filled with love and light <3

  28. I am so excited about 2015, This is the year when I step up and get serious about creating a bigger, bolder, brighter life and I want to say thank you gabby for being part of my world. I feel incredibly lucky to be doing what I love and to be making a difference in the lives of others.
I know that one of the things that has helped me to change my life so significantly from that stressed out overwhelmed person I used to be is caring less about what other people think about me and tuning in more to the “Real Me”
That hasn’t been easy to do and I’ve had plenty of fear around it, fear of judgement and fear of failing and of not being good enough have been constant in my life and to be honest they still are but I no longer let them hold me back, or at least not as much. In previous years I have had big dreams but not been consistent in taking action because self doubt got in the way. Not anymore though xxxxxx

  29. Happy New Year!
It’s great to read everyones’ intentions for 2015. I would like to work on my self control that rears its head in many aspects of my life. I am taking my control back.
Here’s to a strong, soul filling year.
    Namaste-
    Noelle

  30. I am on day 21 of a sadhana using your irrational meditation. Joining that with your managing feelings blog. Simply learning to not react so quickly and instead breathe, pray and wait. 🙂 You forgot to tell us your resolutions!

  31. I want to increase my self love and confidence. Any tips on what I can do and repeat on a daily basis to keep my intention?

  32. Hi Gabby:) I join the New Year wishes, Happy New Year! …I haven’t done something like this before. Meditated and done some yoga in the past yes, but never received guidance like this. ..Gabby, I have recently experienced a breakup from the most serious relationship I ever had, I’ve been left/abandoned (against my wishes). – Will/ can you truly be there to support me through that passage you’ve meant above in your message? I feel that I really need something like this! Someone needs to stick by my side this coming month and guide me through a passage to the other side. I hope this will be it. /Many Hugs all from here. /M

    1. Hi Marla. I think she is giving us support and staying by our side by means of her books and advice, plus she keeps us ALL in her thoughts. I can only tell you that most of the work is done by us. This year wasn’t the greatest. I too came out of a relationship, the kind I thought would be the last. We it engaged, bought a house, had plans for kids etc. But of course it didn’t work that way, and for the better. Since then I’ve been focusing a lot on myself. We often give to others but don’t take the time to receive and give time to ONESELF. From experience, diving deeper into spirituality and having me as #1 priority is important so then I can be clear on what I want. To be open to the abundance of love, opportunities and in a similar way, to give back to others. I do wish you all the best. You have the power to make miracles happen in your life, because you are energy, the source, the universe, and when you understand that, great things happen.
      Much love..

  33. Hi Gabby! My number one intention is to stop my lack mentality around food and finally stop getting up to eat during the night. I have been on and off doing this since I was a kid. It emotionally and physically weighs me
Down. So yes–any advice welcome but I have but my affirmation posters everywhere haha!! What’s scary is the change itself—but I know it is the change I need. Happy new year and thanks for
    Reading

  34. Gabby,
First of all…Happy New Year to you!!! You are so inspirational. I began my journey with Louise Hay and You Can Heal Your Life…then took a break. I’m back.
I truly want to lose some weight in 2015. I am the notorious 2 weeker. I lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks last summer and probably put 15 back on!!!! HELP!!! Want to start eating right and exercise. Fingers crossed!!!! any suggestions are MORE than welcome!!!!!!!

  35. Thank you Gabby! 2014 was most definitely my year of self discovery. I did that with your guidance. May you have a dynamic and soulful 2015. See you in SF in February

  36. Happy New Year, Gabby!

I talked about something similar at my blog today too. The New Year has us all thinking about goals, but goals don’t mean anything unless it’s something we really really really want with our whole being. If we don’t, if we only think it’s something we should be doing, it is so easy to get derailed. http://stacymporter.com/2014/12/29/its-never-too-late-to-begin-again/

Thank you for all the inspiration, Gabby. You are amazing! Hope you had a great holiday and are enjoying the sunshine in Australia! xoxo

  37. Thanks for an excellent post. 2014 was very difficult for me but I am setting those intentions to realign with my inner spirit junkie! Thanks for guiding me for the past four years 🙂

  38. Thank you for your inspiring video – I am making change through evoxly : getting myself out there and sharing my gifts and super powers with women who want to get from where they are to where they want to be – whether in life or business, through self-love, motivation, community and physical letters that are delivered directly to them… I have put it out to the public today! I am getting fierce with daily action!!! Thank you xoxoxo Lots of Love xoxoxox 🙂
