“Understand through compassion or you will misunderstand the times.”

Hi Spirit Junkies!

Sometimes our most negative encounters can offer us great spiritual guidance. For instance, I once had a blow-out fight with a woman at a car rental counter. For whatever reason she felt the need to flaunt her power and go out of her way to make things difficult for me. My reaction wasn’t so cute. I felt the need to respond with my own power play by threatening to call her manager and make a complaint. And I did just that.

Hours after stating my claim to her corporate office and regional manager, I felt no better. I thought that complaining about how poorly I was treated would help me get over the experience. Oddly, it made me feel worse. I sat with this and explored what the lesson was for me.

In stillness I heard my inner voice recite one of Yogi Bhajan’s five sutras for the Aquarian age: “Recognize the other person is you.” Tweet it!

I was pretty floored by my inner guide — the message was so clear and resonant.

I went on to explore what it was about this angry customer service rep that reflected me. I came to realize that her behavior was merely mirroring a disowned part of my own shadow. In silent contemplation I was able to accept that deep down there was a part of me that wanted to control the situation and the outcome. This was the same quality the customer-service representative had. Her deep-rooted need to be in control came head to head with my need to be in control and all hell broke loose.

The moment I realized that her pain and suffering was mine too was the instant that compassion set in. I felt a deep sense of love and connection to this woman who I was fighting with just hours ago. I felt compassion for her sadness, her powerlessness and her need to be in control. I then turned the compassion toward myself. I honored the dark places within me that still felt the same need to control, exercise power and release unfelt pain.

Another of Yogi Bhajan’s five sutras for the Aquarian age is, “Understand through compassion or you will misunderstand the times.” Tweet it!

This sutra echoed through my mind as I healed my false perception of the woman at the car rental kiosk. In the midst of compassion I was able to reconnect with what is real, what connects us and why we’re here: to love and be loved. When we choose to dissolve all boundaries with love then we truly begin living.

The key point in this message is that even complete strangers can offer us opportunities to look more closely at the shadow sides of ourselves that we want to keep hidden. A Course in Miracles teaches, “The hidden can terrify not for what it is, but for its hiddenness.” The issue isn’t what we’re hiding, it’s that we’re unwilling to expose it to the light and deal with it. The miracle moments when we become the witness of our ego’s shadow are the moments when we can surrender. Let people be a mirror to reflect back to you what you need to address in yourself.

The next time someone riles you up, witness your reaction and remember that the qualities you don’t like in them are a disowned part of your shadow. Be still and allow your inner guide to teach you what you need to release. Be willing to recognize that the other person is you, understand through compassion and allow people to be your greatest teachers.

Oneness, compassion and love are what we need to connect and serve the world. Tweet it!

We’re living in a time when separation and attack have destroyed cultures and communities and ended countless lives. No matter where you are in the world you are feeling the effect of separation. We all have a role to play in healing the energy of the world so that we can balance out the negativity that has taken over. It is our responsibility to heal our false perceptions of others and lead from a place of compassion and grace.

  2. Gabby,
You just answered the question I had for you last night after watching the news. I never watch them. The world is going crazy. I am scared.
Thank you for reminding us the power we have to shift the energy of the planet, as well as our own energy.
Thank you for your powerful messages.
Sending you beautiful light and energy,
    Claire

  3. So very true Gabby! Sometimes when caught up in the day to day life especially as a busy business owner we forget to lead with compassion. I definitely feel the separation and I will continue to do my part as a positive force on this planet! Blessings to you!

  4. Once you recognize someone else is a direct reflection, how do you work to change your behavior and your feelings toward them? Obviously, forgiveness, but what else? I have a person in my life who for years has caused me major anxiety because she mirrors the person I used to be, a person within me I’ve healed. I find I get angry with her because she isn’t willing to change. I can imagine the response is forgive, release, and have compassion. That’s easy to remember but how do you prevent that anger, that dislike and strong aversion to people who reflect a darkness within us?

  5. Beautiful. I loved the global meditation you and Deepak did last year. You both have this magnetic energy that is truly incredible. I laughed so much listening to you two banter and the songs were so beautiful…can’t wait for this year’s…we definitely need it. After what happened in Charleston, it’s really what the world needs. I’m so happy you’re doing it again.

    xoxo

  6. I can’t say enough about how appropriate this article is these days… I was just having a discussion about compassion the other day and feeling like where has it gone??? So often lately it seems to have disappeared in the world when it’s needed most. Great article Gabby!

  7. Thank you very much Gabrielle. Your words came to me in a very dark encounter. I’ve been doing major healing and have made huge progress. But today I had a dark encounter with a sibling. It was such a breakthrough for me to walk away from her with love. To let her know that I love her but that I can’t participate in the fights anymore. If I love myself, I can’t be bullied. But saying this made the bullying more and violated my boundaries even further. My question to you Gabrielle, what do you do with your own unexpressed dark-side?

    1. i believe in therapy, prayer and deep inner soul work… open up to receive guidance and it will be given to you.

  8. You’re a ‘hoot’ Gabby. And a ‘spunky’ one! They don’t get any better than that. Thank you for bein’ you. (Not as easy as it looks.)

  9. In this current state of the world this message is so important for everyone to hear. Recognizing one’s power to shift their own world and the world around us would create change beyond our imagination.
Thank you Gabby for shining your light!

  10. Hi Gabby,

Thanks for this, I think I needed a reminder today. I saw you in Melbourne last year and you were great – thanks for visiting!

I have a conflict inside of me because on my spiritual path I often hear spiritual teachers such as yourself advise me to not read the news to keep the suffering of the world out but I feel my calling in this world and im studying sustainability and development so it is important for me to keep up with the news so I can be educated to make the changes I want to see in this world.

One thing I do try to do is not read the news until later in the day so I’ve meditated and had a peaceful morning and I find this really helps me. Do you have any other thoughts on this?

  11. Spot on Gabby, you introduced me to Yogi Bhajan’s five sutras for the Aquarian age when you came to London a long while back, and since then I continually find myself applying them to situations in my life… esp “Recognize the other person is you.” Just thinking/saying that sutra takes away any negative edge that I may be feeling. I love it.
You rock. Thank you. Sat Nam x

  12. Dear Gabrielle, I cannot say in words what your work means to me. Since I read your recent book, I’m finally able to effectively work on the unsolved issues in my life. Your book is so well structured and clear that it is very easy to work with. Thank you also for this article. It just “came in” as I asked for inner guidance. And finally thank you for the love and grace youre bringing into this World!

  13. Hi Gabby,

I just love how honest you are. I just sent this link to my husband saying, “Gabby could be writing about me!!”

Thank you for being the enormous shining light that you are Gabby.

    With love and gratitude,

    Annette

  14. I’m also a Kundalini Yogi and I really appreciated your viewpoint on how you apply the sutra’s into your own life. I’ve been struggling with this… My mother and I have always had a challenging relationship and I started witnessing the things I despise in her are things are within me too. Harsh reality but so needed it… Now on to work and heal:)

  15. Thank you Gabby for this awakening article. I love how you looked inward to find where your need for control was coming from and used that as a point to change your view. It’s som we can all do for ourselves to help us become a more enlightened person.

  16. The stories of video show really inspire to me. I also remind me about live with more understanding and allow me building my compassion. Love your works.

  17. Gabby,
I just started reading Miracles Now this past week and the next day broke up with my boyfriend after 2 years. He has been on a week long drinking binge but your tools are helping me so much to see the light and love in this situation. I’m thankful to God for bringing me to a place where I can choose to love myself so much that I can leave this and know that it’s this or better -definitely better.
Thank you thank you thank you! I can’t wait for the rest of my life! :)
    xo

  18. Hello Gabby!

I am a new fan and recently started reading Spirit Junkie. I am now addicted to your videos, blogs etc. I often say “I love Gabby!” You are just what I; and I now realize what the world needs). I have a long way to go but I finally see light!!

Although i am very successful, my life is what I used to refer to as a train wreck. Now I just see abundant possibility. I could go on and on but I do have a point related to this post.

My husband made a negative comment about my body. I cannot get over it. How do I find love in a situation that was so hurtful to me. I honestly thought “F” that, there is no love there! So how can we find the love on the really tough cases, those close to us whose words hurt much more than a stranger who may irritate us?

    Your comments are appreciated.

Thank you so much. You are a gift to the world and so beautiful inside and out!!

  19. Hi Gabby,

I just had to leave a comment to tell you that I found your video on asking the universe for signs and I thought it was amazing. I was feeling very down, losing faith in everything I believe about the divine spirit, a higher force and us all being united as one in love. I was beginning to think I was crazy. Anyway, on Thursday, I asked the universe for a sign. I said, divine spirit, if you are real, if everything I have held dear about you is true – please show me a rainbow. Well, the next day (unbeknownst to me), same sex marriage became legal in the USA. When I got up, there were rainbows everywhere! Flags, social media, even the white house all decked out in rainbows! Literally people all over the world displaying rainbows. I couldn’t believe it! So happy! #lovewins :-) xx

  20. We’ve been humin beings for thousands of years and it’s not working. Instead, we can become humins doing. We may begin with meditation but we can continue with doing compassion for self & others to “create the world we’ve always dreamed of.” Here are some critical examples of doing “loving kindness” /
    * Adhere to laws
    * Eat nutritiously, exercise
    * Maintain good mental hygiene & emotional wellness; seek mental health treatment when necessary; meditation does not cure mental disorders, which are at the root of chaos in the world
    * Purchase green & fair (environmentally, socially sustainable) products, services
    * Remain childfree /
    – Until we can financially afford children (create a family budget factoring expenses for at least twenty-five years per child)
    – If we have a mental disorder
    – If we are in an abusive relationship
    * Work to achieve long-term economic security starting with a 4-year college degree

    Sat nam, my friends!
