How to Let Go of the Story You Tell Yourself

I have a gorgeous quote for you from my dear teacher and mentor Marianne Williamson.

Marianne says, “Let go of your story so the Universe can write a new one for you.”

This is what we have to do when we are committed to a life of spiritual growth. We are always learning, growing and saying yes to more ways of expanding our inner wisdom.

We must be willing to let go of our stories

When we’re on a path of personal growth, we have to be willing to let go of our stories. In this video and post I share a simple, powerful way to turn over an old story and ask the Universe to write you a new one.

Watch the video now — you can also follow the steps below.

Surrendering our stories to the Universe

In my book The Universe Has Your Back, I talk about how we can start to shift our perceptions of the stories we once had. The only way we can allow the Universe to come in and change those stories is to be willing to give them up. The Universe can’t take from us anything that we’re unwilling to give away.

Step 1: Witness your story and thank it

I Surrender to a Power Greater Than Me | Gabby Bernstein | The Universe Has Your Back card deckLook at your story — the story of your traumatic memories, your addictions, your experiences with your loved ones, the spouse who cheated on you, the medical diagnosis. And start to thank that story.

Thank your story for being part of your life and for getting you this far, and for making you the amazing person you are today.

Step 2: Let go of the story through prayer

Then you can decide that it’s time to break up with that story, if you’re ready. Let go of the story you tell yourself and surrender it to the care of the Universe so the Universe can rewrite it for you.

This is the simplicity of being on a spiritual path. All you have to do is witness that you no longer want to live that story and offer it up through prayer. You can say to the Universe:

Take this from me and show me a different way. Show me how to see this with more love, compassion, forgiveness and grace. Thank you for taking it from me.

Trust that the Universe has your back

The Universe Has Your Back by Gabby BernsteinThroughout The Universe Has Your Back, I share a lot of different practices to offer up to the Universe the fears, grievances and limitations that hold you back. When you let go of your story and give it over to the Universe, the Universe can rewrite it for you.

If you’re reading the book, use those messages and tools! And if you’re not yet reading it, order it today. You can begin this practice right now. Simply witness an old story that no longer serves you, decide it’s time to break up with it and offer it up to the Universe to be rewritten.

I pray for you all that you have the experience of shifting out of the old victim mentality and opening up to the greatness of all that can come to you when you let go of what was and embrace what can come.

I feel so much anxiety due my past and early traumas, I’m lookintg the way to work with them to disolve them definitely in my life.

Thank you for your videos and wisdom publicity offered.

    From Venezuela,

  2. Wow! This is what the universe ordered up for me. I feel you (and my spirit guides) were talking to me. Thank you for sharing this lesson with such clarity and simplicity. I can do this. Much love to you, Gabby. So grateful that you share your spiritual lessons and gifts with me.

  3. Hi Gabby!

I’ve been reading your newest book for a couple weeks now and the coolest thing has been happening. I’ve been making the tiniest of shifts, purely in my thoughts and responses, and miracles have been happening. Every. Single. Day. I’m bursting at the freaking seams with gratitude for you, for taking the time and energy to write the book.

And of course watching this video *today* was a miracle in and of itself, since it’s exactly what I needed to hear today.

    Keep rockin’ on spirit sister!

  4. I just bought your book today. I can’t wait to start reading it. I have heard so many wonderful and amazing things about you!!! I need so good positive changes in my life and I am ready to explore on how to do that.

  5. I was jist talking about this. How all the bad in my life has lead me to this place right now. My beautiful daughters, my wonderful home, a man who loves me. I just have one trouble and it’s always the same no matter where I’ve been in life….money. i just can’t seem to find my way with money. I know I can be successful. I see it in my head all the time, I just have to believe that I’m where I am right now, for a reason. I’ll continue my path, wherever it leads me. Thank you Gabby

  6. Blessings to you for sharing this message. SO ready to give up my story. I’m actually bored with it and the victim I’ve become accustomed to being.

  7. Yes!!! I just finished a blog article about my latest visit home and how, once I shifted which childhood memories I focused on, the vibe of my experience went through the roof! I had the best visit ever all because I focused on all the good things from growing up instead of all the things I wished had been different. Loved your book, btw!!!!

  8. Thank you for bringing me back to the simplicity offered in life when practiced from a spiritual perspective. Thank you for being so consistent and for your weekly vlog. When I’m feeling lost – it’s my first go to. You’re deeply appreciated.

  9. Oh my goodness! I literally was saying to myself, as I observed myself repeating in my mind a story that I have identified with for years, I said out loud, ‘I’m sick of this, I don’t want to keep saying that to myself any longer’. Then, I kid you not the next second I looked at the notifications on my phone & saw at the top of my list, an email from Gabby about letting go of your story! And I just watched the video! Wow! Goosebumps all over my body right now! Thank you Gabby, time to breakup with the old & embrace a new story!

  10. Yes!
I am bored of my story, the one where I blame everything negative on being fat and laaaaazy. I don’t want to be the victim of this mentality any longer.

    I LET IT GO.

    Thankyou Gabby.

  11. Dear Gabby, thanks for your amazing work, such a blessing and a ‘new breeze’. I just read TUHYB but think I am going to read it again and apply the different techniques and tips. Wish I could join you in NYC in June, am now in B-school and a writer myself. Would looove to have tea together one day 🙂 Thanks again, you are amazing xx

  12. I just finished a writing course that inspired me to reserect painful stories from my childhood. The running theme that wove throughout was betrayal. I was betrayed by people I trusted and loved. It took courage and strength to record and share these truths. I am ready to let them go hoping that they will help someone some day who is going through similar experiences.

  13. YES. For years i’ve tried to control my spiritual path and plan out how i’m going to heal – and my “story” that I need to let go of was the reason why. I’ve always felt that i’ve grown, but i’m just not healing like I should be from the past for some reason. This is what I needed to come full circle.
Also, my name is Navneet, and I saw someone commented with the same name!!! Its so uncommon, so it really shocked me! Love love love.

  14. Good morning Gabby thank you for this wonderful message do you have to say this prayer to release every day and for how long??

  15. Thanks for this quick lesson today Gabby! I recently took a big step in my relationship with my ex husband and coparent. All week I could feel this freedom inside me, but I just now thanked the story and offered it up through prayer. I do not need this story anymore. I was cheated on, lied to, manipulated, and fearful to upset him. This story stayed with me for a long time for a reason, but I truly don’t need it anymore. It has no value anymore. I released it and I look forward to my new story. Bless You:)

  16. Gabby I can’t believe the synchronicity with you posting this. I have been sober 13 years and my Mum just pasted away. In preparing her eulogy which was a letter to her I talked all about that. I spent most of my life blaming things on my parents and making excuses and stories up in my head. The disease of perception at its finest. I changed my whole story and freed myself from the bondage of self. It all happened after finding two bags of childhood pictures and I looked at them all in a different light. My guides and angels totally did this.

  17. Thank you Gabby. Such a cool perspective. I’m amazed how we (ahem me 😉 ) hold on to our stories for dear life, even if they cause us pain. We can always change our thoughts and let go and let God. Thank you for bringing this to Light. Xx

  18. Gabby,
This is beautiful. It’s so freeing to simply give our old stories up to something bigger then ourselves. Giving it up and releasing it all gives room for the new to blossom. Thank you for this reminder.

  19. That one hit me! As someone who can feel like a broken record, not so much about rehashing a specific condition but just wondering how I can move past myself and become more, the idea that we can just ask the Universe to make us different, to write us a new story, is such a beautiful idea! Thank you, Gabby!

  20. Yes, I work on this every day but I have my moments when I get angry for the ways I’ve been treated. I’ve been focusing so hard on holding onto self, being present, and honoring my feelings. You book has helped me in so many ways. Namaste

  21. Grateful to you for these words today. On a journey with your book as a trusted guide for several weeks now. Is there a particular meditation suggested after reading this post?

      1. Oh boy, struggling to get this at the moment. I am probably a bit older than some of your followers (which is one “story” I am holding on to at the moment.) I’m taking a copywriting class, feeling VERY socially anxious and having trouble understanding the creative concepts (though I seem to get them when not focussed on the “technical” aspects), feeling less than in a class of very young (and in my perception), savvy folks. I’ve also started writing freelance, but not quick in getting stories to my editor. Oh, just feeling down at the moment. It is tough living in my head!

I only recommend products and brands I passionately believe in, but wanted you to know that when I make a recommendation, I may receive a referral fee.
