Hi Spirit Junkies!

What It’s Like to Be 1 Year Off Sugar!

Hey Spirit Junkies!

This month I celebrated 1 year off sugar! I’m super proud of this commitment and I feel empowered to continue forward. I didn’t quit sugar for vanity — I quit for vitality. Since quitting sugar I’ve never felt healthier. My energy levels are high, my immune system is strong and I feel great inside and out! In this video I share what it’s like to be 1 year off sugar!

A meditation practice that will change your life…

Last summer I was invited to attend a four-day Transcendental Meditation training. This invitation came at the perfect time on my spiritual path. By this point on my journey I was heavily involved in the practices of Kundalini meditation and I was taking myself through another round of the daily meditations from A Course in Miracles. Though I felt spiritually fulfilled, I was curious and interested in expanding my spiritual repertoire.

Throughout my life I had heard a lot about Transcendental Meditation (“TM”). I had read about the great health benefits and energy shifts TM offered. I was curious and open. That summer I was living out at the beach and I knew that the TM teachers from the David Lynch Foundation were training people in a beach house nearby. I inquired about the training but was told it was full. Then one day out of blue I got a text from my friend Michael.

His text said, “I don’t know why but I thought you’d really like the TM four-day training. I put a call in for you and got you into a group next week!”

I was blown away by this universal hook-up and immediately replied YES!

After a short four-day training I was given the gift of Transcendental Meditation.

TM is a simple meditation practice where you sit for 20 minutes twice a day and recite a unique mantra. This mantra is given to you by your teacher. The coolest thing about having a mantra is that it’s only for you! That’s right, you can’t share it with anyone.

Transcendental meditation allows your body to settle into a state of deep rest and relaxation and clears space for your mind to reach a state of inner peace.

A study published in the journal Circulation found that practicing Transcendental Meditation lowers blood pressure and your risk for heart attack and stroke. It could also cut your risk for Alzheimer’s disease by strengthening the communication between different parts of your brain. Other studies have shown that TM reduces stress, blood pressure, anxiety, depression and anger.

The greatest study of all is the one I performed on myself. Through my daily TM practice I have found a new freedom and peace. I feel more at ease, less irrational and more connected to the flow of the universe. TM has greatly benefited my relationships, especially my connection to my husband. We practice TM together and feel a deep connection we hadn’t known before. TM helps us stay compassionate, loving and understanding toward one another.

Do You Fall Off the Spiritual Wagon?

Last week I got an email from one of my blog readers expressing deep concern about her spiritual path. She said, “I’ve been following you since the beginning. Yup, I’m an ~ing girl. And even though I have so many spiritual tools I still find that I fall off course. How do I stay committed to my spiritual path?”

This is not the first time I’ve heard this from a reader. Every week people in my lecture audiences, social media feed and blog community comment on their fear of falling off the spiritual wagon.

Does this sound familiar? Do you get super psyched about a 40-day meditation practice or a 90-day yoga challenge only to lose steam a few days in? If the answer is yes, you’re not alone. For the past decade I’ve committed to being a spiritual student and teacher — and I too fall of the spiritual wagon on a regular basis. But throughout my spiritual journey I’ve found tools that help me climb right back on it.

Try my three tried-and-true steps for staying on the spiritual wagon. They’ll help you stay committed, consistent and passionate about your spiritual path!

Step 1: When in doubt, play it out.
It’s easy to forget about the long-term consequences of small choices, especially when temptation (e.g., watching Scandal instead of meditating) is right in front of you. Instead of summoning every ounce of willpower to resist the urge, remember: When in doubt, play it out. That’s right. Play out the entire story from start to finish. You step away from your meditation pillow and and press play. When when one episode is over you say, “Eff it, why not watch another?” Four hours later you turn on the lights and realize hours have passed, you’re stuck in a TV binge and you think you’re Olivia Pope. Oh, and you totally forgot to meditate.

Whatever the issue, if you take the time to play out the entire scenario you’ll be able to talk yourself out of making a mistake. The key is to think your way through the whole story. Not just the fun part where you get cozy on your couch and fire up the Roku. Play the story all the way through to the end when you crash and burn. Your honesty and willingness to remember what is real will save you when you want to relapse into old behavior. Use this tool whenever you find yourself enchanted by something that ultimately will take you away from your spiritual practice.

Step 2: F it!

When we fall off of the spiritual wagon, we often enter a cycle of guilt that sabotages our progress even more. What if you could learn to forgive yourself on the spot? Forgiveness is a choice you make. {Tweet it} In an instant you can shift from self-hatred and attack to self-love and compassion. Your simple decision to choose to forgive yourself will open the floodgates for peace. Next time you judge yourself for falling off the spiritual wagon, just say, “I choose to forgive myself now.” Then relax into that commitment and let forgiveness take over. You can also try to catch yourself in the act of self-attack. In those moments, redirect your energy by focusing something you do like about yourself. Whenever you detour, call on forgiveness to guide you back onto the path.

Step 3: Clarity and Repetition.
For nearly a decade, I’ve received requests from miracle-minded folks asking for monthly tools to help them stay consistent and inspired on their spiritual paths. I’ve heard countless stories of people diving into their practices only to revert back to old behavior after a few weeks. And I get it. It can be challenging to stay committed to your personal and spiritual growth amid all the responsibilities and noise of everyday life. Over the years, I’ve found that what helps me most in staying committed to my spiritual path is clarity and repetition. This simplicity and direction keeps me on track.

Fear holds us in a headlock. Here’s how to get out…

Uncertainty causes a lot of our fear. When we feel uncertain, we often try to control our experiences as much as possible so we can feel safe. Ironically, though, this desire for control doesn’t lead us to safety. Instead, it creates more fear.

The metaphysical text A Course in Miracles teaches that, The presence of fear is a sure sign that you’re relying on your own strength. {Tweet} Whenever we’re trying to control outcomes we’ve separated from our true source of power, a.k.a. our inner wisdom and intuition. When we fully surrender to this inner power, we can come to know true freedom and peace.

The #1 Key to Success

I recently had a soulful conversation with my dear friend Robert Holden, the author of the new book, Holy Shift. We discussed how people get stuck in the belief system that they need to achieve some sort of outer success to be happy.

Robert said “I see it differently. Instead of thinking your success will create happiness, I believe that committing to your happiness increases your chances for success.”

For the past decade I’ve been writing self-help books and preaching the Gospel of Gabby to lecture audiences throughout the world. No matter what country I’m in, I always seem hear the same 3 questions come up. Because these questions are so popular I decided to bring my answers to you! I’m confident that in some way or another you too have these questions and I hope this blog will support you.

The 3 most common self-help questions:

The first and most popular question is, “How do I release my fear?” My response is the same no matter what the person may fear. All our fears are rooted in the stories we choose to believe in. When we get stuck in negative stories (“I don’t have enough,” “I’m unsafe,” “I’m not good enough,” and so on), we give them continuous energy to feed on. By no means am I belittling our difficult, even traumatic, experiences. Instead, I’m offering the suggestion that we learn to release them so they don’t hold us hostage for the rest of our lives.

Begin to heal your fears right now simply by acknowledging them. We tend to put a lot of effort into ignoring our fears. Try looking at them instead. Upon looking at your fear, say, “I choose to see peace instead of this.” This simple choice shifts your perspective and begins a new pattern of releasing the fear rather than gripping it tightly. Stay committed to this statement: “I choose to see peace instead of this.” And trust that you are creating a new story. A shift in perspective may seem subtle, but it is infinitely powerful.

The second most popular question I get is, “How do I attract a romantic partner?” This question is relevant even if you’re attached! Attracting (or keeping) a romantic partner has everything to do with the energy you emit. If you give off a low vibe you are deflecting romance — your energy basically tells other people to back off. But if you choose to dwell in an energy of joy, you become super attractive. The simple tool here is to lean into what is joyful. If you make joy and inspiration a priority in your life you’ll become a magnet for attracting all kinds of relationships. Pay close attention to how your good attitude brings forth more love. If this feels new and weird to you, start with your interactions with friends, colleagues or even strangers. Share kindness and joy and see how it changes your everyday encounters.

The final question that I hear all the time is, “How do I meditate?” These days people are becoming more and more comfortable with the concept of meditation. Folks can easily identify that they are stressed and anxious. The way out of that stress and anxiety is through meditation. The simplest way to begin a meditation practice is through your breath. You have a minute to spare, right? One minute a day spent in stillness can change your life. Commit to one minute a day and use the practice below to silence your mind and calm your energy. Even if you have never meditated before, trust me: You can do this.

The One-Minute Breath
For one minute follow this breathing technique:
Breathe in for 5 seconds
Hold your breath for 5 seconds
Release for 5 seconds
Hold for 5 seconds
Repeat
